497スミスの肖像だけじゃない20ポンド紙幣

移動中に中部国際空港アクセスプラザ・トラベレックスが目に入り，20ポンド紙幣を手に入れた（昨日時点で約2,600円）。かつて触れたように現在の20ポンド紙幣の裏にはアダム・スミスの肖像がある。
右を向いたスミスの肖像と「ADAM SMITH 1723-1790」の文字がある。さらに中央に目を移すとピン製造の5つの画があり，中央下には

The division of labour in pin manufacturing:
(and the great increase in the quantity of work that results)

とある。ピン製造の分業が労働生産物量を増大させることを強調している*1。スミスの写真は James Tassie (Scottish National Portrait Gallery) の肖像を，画は The British Library 蔵書をもとにしているという。
スミスの肖像に目を奪われていて，現物を見て初めて5つの画と分業論に気がついたのだった。スミスを素ミス（回文）ではあった。（画像は3番目の記事から。画像中の数字は紙幣製造上の特徴で，3番目の記事に詳しい。）


*1:スミスの『国富論』ではピン製造では約18の作業工程があることを論じていた。'One man draws out the wire, another straights it, a third cuts it, a fourth points it, a fifth grinds it at the top for receiving the head; to make the head requires two or three distinct operations; to put it on, is a peculiar business, to whiten the pins is another; it is even a trade by itself to put them into the paper; and the important business of making a pin is, in this manner, divided into about eighteen distinct operations, which, in some manufactories, are all performed by distinct hands, though in others the same man will sometimes perform two or three of them.'
